“Seven years ago I took the position as Director of Lay Ministry at Roswell Pres. I was looking for a curriculum about spiritual gifts as I sought to help our membership find meaningful ways to serve God in this place. The day I was to order the materials, a letter from David Stark arrived. He spoke of a more holistic approach of looking at Life Gifts (the God given ways that come naturally to us…no effort), Personality Type (the way we are wired to react), Spiritual Gifts (the ways God enables us to further His kingdom), Values (the filter through which we live life out), and Purpose (how is it that God is calling us to live fulfilling lives with a sense of joy and enthusiasm). It sounded totally Presbyterian to me – goodness even using Myer Briggs to help evaluate!! I have made no wiser decision in my tenure here on Roswell’s staff. We have used this curriculum and seen it transform lives in our congregation – two members have finished seminary, one will start this fall! Programs have sprung up from the dreams and calls of individual members. LifeKeys helps our members realize that their gifts are truly gifts and that God uses ALL to compliment and make the church and world work…without any gift, the whole cannot be complete. When individuals realize how very much God has loved them in their creation and honestly look at how they have been made – they are more open to God’s call on their lives. There is a fun workbook and a very thoughtful text that explores all of the options and helps in the identification process. We have seen so many wonderful things happen. A year ago we had a high school senior take the class – he demanded the his Roman Catholic lawyer father come, too. Matthew got very busy with senior work and missed some classes…his dad missed none. Matthew was nurtured by the entire older class and realized that God was calling him to be a writer – he is having a very successful year at school and writes for the local newspaper. His father had a profound experience – he displays his LifeGift statement, ragged as it is, on the wall with his diplomas and certificates of recognition. We have used this curriculum in retreat settings, two Saturday classes, ten one and a half our class periods, the staff has gone through the process. We have shared it with churches in our Presbytery, actually having David Stark come to lead two leadership events. God has been faithful and we love to share the story!”
